The irony of mental health

I have been suffering with mental health issues probably since I was early teens, now in my mid twenties I have come to accept that no one will ever understand what I am going through!

I have seen councillors, specialists more than a dozen times and each time I get "theres nothing wrong with you" so why is it that I go to them in the first place there is obviously something wrong that I have been refered to someone in that proffession. Mental health is a journey that we all must embark on alone with support but not "help" from others no one can provide you with help you have to help yourself.

I see sports clubs get behind mental awareness brands but when it comes down to it no one ever thinks mental health its always "your rude" or "dickhead" everybody wants to be part of it but nobody wants to fulfil their moral obligations to help their fellow human.

I dont really know what this post is for or about but maybe it just helps getting things off my chest. Im not in a bad place at the moment but I have been recently and Im fed up of apologizing for my mental health I wouldn't as a wheelchair bound person to apologize to me for not being able to walk so Im sick of having to apologize for being mental ill.

@The_flying_pom- It's definitely ironic that MH is dismissed or thrown into the too hard basket.  Clearly it's a bigger issue than our socitey and our politicians want to ackwnowledge.  All you have to do is look at the statistics around the sucide rates in this country.  They aren't getting any better despite the push for a better understanding of MH issues.

I've only been dealing with my own issues for a short time, just over a year.  I've struggled to find support from my own family or from anywhere.  People might listen, but, they don't really understand.  How can they if they haven't lived through some of it themselves?

I think with the sports and organisations it's just a PC thing they are pushing to look like they are doing something.  When it gets down to it I don't know how much ground work they are doing.  I don't see them promoting a help service or helpline for people to call.  I don't see them organising funds for people with MH issues.  They don't organise work for them.  I think they just go through the motions.

It's probably getting a bit more coverage since one of theire poster boys has fallen of the rails lately.

It sounds like you are getting the run around by the doctors which isn't uncommon from what I've heard.  I think all you can do is keep trying untill you find one that wants to help you.

Re: The irony of mental health

Hi @The_flying_pom and welcome to the forums.

It is a real sign of strength when you reach out for help, knowing there is something wrong.  I feel for you, having been cast aside while trying to flag down help for my husband, and being told he’s okay, and I should look to sorting out my own health .....

There is a thread here for under 30’s, but I will tag @MDT and @outlander here as they are a couple of younger forums members, and they can introduce you to some others too, as well as tagging you to that thread.

Hi @Gazza75 👋

Mental health is a journey but not one that you have to go alone. While theres not much offline support for you, we here on the forums are more then happy to support you through anything that youd like to share with us.

As @Faith-and-Hope mentioned, there is an under 30s thread which ill tag you to now and introduce you to some other members
