Bipolar episodes every 8 months
Hi everyone, I have been with my husband for 4 yrs now. 5 days ago he started to become very irrational and grumpy. He is not currently medicated professionally for his bipolar but is medicated for his depression. I am not sure what to do as the last 3 times he just pushes me away and tells me to stay away and he hates me. After a couple of days I always seem to be able to settle him down and we get back to a stable living. I feel there is always something that sets it off. I need advice on wat I can do and how to organise the help he needs? He also is self medicating with marijuana. He has been violent in past relationships but so far has never been towards me.

Re: Bipolar episodes every 8 months
@Scruffy Hi Scruffy welcome to the boards. I have Bipolar 1 and am medicated for the disorder. If you can talk your husband into seeing a mental health professional that would be a good thing particuarly with his history of bipolar. I know for a fact most antidepressants do not work well with people suffering from bipolar and can have negative symptoms.
Good luck I am sure it is all easier said than done.

Thank you, I am hoping to be able to talk him around to getting that help and seeing as you say anti depressants can not be helpful

Re: Bipolar episodes every 8 months
@Scruffy My pleasure, yes he really needs to see someone quick fast. Someone who knows all about Bipolar Disorder. Getting him on the right medication and to help him stop self medicating would be the way to go.
Good luck with it and let us all know how he and you go with it all.

Re: Bipolar episodes every 8 months
Hello @Scruffy, how are you today
for a fact most antidepressants do not work well with people suffering from bipolar, because my husband has been on anti depressants for years with no change , it was not until he ended up in hospital , they put hime on anti anxiety Medications as well as the anti depressants
we still have ups and downs everyday , but not like before
Keep in touch my friend , you are not alone

@Shaz51 Hi Shaz51 yeah Bipolar is a b tch! Spinning a bit today but at least I haven't had any midnight walks which is a good thing. Sorry to hear that your husband has Bipolar too ... I always feel for the families as I know I am bad news when it is up and running at full on pace.

Re: Bipolar episodes every 8 months
Hi everyone
Welcome to the Forums @Scruffy!
The situation with your husband sounds really difficult. It’s so hard when we can see that someone we love is struggling and they continue to push us away.
@greenpea and @Shaz51, thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like antidepressants haven’t been helpful in your experience of bipolar, and have perhaps even had negative consequences.
That might not necessarily be the case for everyone. On the whole, it’s good to remember that we all have different experiences with medications and the best person to consult with any questions or concerns is your prescribing practitioner.
@Scruffy, you have mentioned that you’re looking for advice on how to organise the help your husband needs. As @greenpea suggested, a couple of things you could do are look for a practitioner who specialises in bipolar disorder and encourage your husband to have his medication reviewed. Can you provide a bit more information for other Forum members about the help your husband currently has? For example, is he seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist at the moment?

Re: Bipolar episodes every 8 months
Thank you so much. But sadly I went up to our home and he didn’t take the idea of help well. He has beaten me and now I am unable to actually contact him due to the Drs and police taking out an AVO on him. It is not a good situation and I know he needs the help so badly but now I have to take a step back and pray he doesn’t do anything silly.
